IFT
I had asked Riya to tell me the name of the treatment she's undergoing for the crack on her right arm below the shoulder.
She responded IFT with a picture of the machine.
I rang her up and asked what it was. She suggested Google.
I asked how she was. She said the pain was receding.
She says IFT is like placing an electric iron on the afftected area. It ensures there is no infamation. It helps in rejoining the bone at the crack. She said when the treatment was on, it was very difficult to endure it.
But she was unwell the whole day. Her doctor had sent a sample to RCC -Regional Cancer centre - for the third time now. She's awaiting the result. According to her the cost of the test was above Rs.22000.00
She said perhaps it's her hypochromia that's causing the weariness.
The doctor had changed the medicine. But she didn't buy it at once and would buy it later - she ascribed the reason as sambathikam - financial.. But she was confident she'd buy it in a few days.
I was just wondering how much people were suffering.
Since I am stranger to the medical profession I checked the web for IFT.
Placing here what I found.
IFT for shoulder pain
Interferential Therapy (IFT) is a drug-free, non-invasive physiotherapy treatment that uses low-frequency electrical currents to penetrate deep into tissues. It is highly effective for shoulder pain by blocking pain signals, reducing inflammation, and relaxing muscle spasms.
How IFT Works for Shoulder PainDeep Tissue Penetration:
IFT uses two medium-frequency currents that intersect inside the targeted area, creating a soothing, low-frequency wave that reaches deep-seated joint and muscle tissues
Pain Relief:
The electrical stimulation triggers the production of endorphins, your body's natural painkillers.Improved Healing: It enhances blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which speeds up tissue repair and reduces swelling.Typical Shoulder Conditions TreatedFrozen shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)Rotator cuff injuries or tendonitisMuscle strains and spasmsPost-surgical shoulder pain (e.g., following subacromial decompression)The Treatment ProcessA standard IFT session for the shoulder typically involves placing four electrodes in a crisscross pattern around the painful area. The physiotherapist will adjust the frequency (typically between 1 Hz and 150 Hz depending on the goal) and current intensity until you feel a comfortable, strong tingling sensation. Sessions usually last for 15 to 20 minutes.
What to Expect & Precautions
While generally safe and comfortable, IFT should always be administered by a licensed physiotherapist. It is typically combined with a guided rehabilitation program—including stretching, manual therapy, and strengthening exercises—for long-term recovery.
Important Safety Warnings
:IFT should not be used if you:
Are pregnant.
Have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device.
Have active cancer, infections, or open wounds in the shoulder area.
Suffer from epilepsy or severe blood clots.
To find a certified physiotherapist who can assess your specific shoulder pain and safely administer IFT, you can use local clinic locators such as Practo or Lybrate to search for experts in your area.
