 These were common sights in Kuttanad in the 1950s,1960s, 1970s or even upto 1990s. Agriculture was the sole mainstay of Kuttanad. Then agriculture had become nonprofitable due to fragmentation of farm lands.. The agriculturists could no longer make both ends meet. The militant labour skyrocketed the costs further. 

Now fallow fields abound in Kuttanad.
