VITILIGO
New hope, new treatments for those who are fighting skin patch stigma
Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder. It is characterised by the loss of normal pigment from skin in localised areas. It is due to an abnormality in the melanocytes - cells that produce melanin, a pigment that gives us our skin, hair and eye colour - in these areas that makes the body's own immune response destroy them.
Sometimes, external chemicals induce vertigo like depigmentation. But very often there is no external cause.
Vitiligo is not contagious.
It is not related to diet though it does have sense triggers
There is no cure for vitiligo, but it can be managed with light therapy, oral medication and in some cases skin grafting.
Anybody with any skin colour or skin type can get vitiligo. It usually begins in childhood or early adulthood but can occur at any age.
Vitiligo may impact mental health. Here the patient's attention must be routed away from the patches and they must be encouraged to focus on other areas of life.
Vitiligo has treatment options that could mellow it down.
